| Out on his little
24 foot Skipjack Tom Brooks and son Tylor were trying to set a shark
record. The goal was a big shark. The Fishing was right this
day.
Tylor (age 15) caught a fine 258# mako shark and was
confident that would be a new youth record for the state. The 250 pound'er
had pulled the boat in a 180 degree turn when gaffed and held to the
side of the boat. The father son team subdued the fish and tied him
to the swim step up out of the water.
The Fishing continued through the night.
Tom says that the big one came that morning, took his
bait and got off. He quickly pinned on another live mackerel and cut
it's tail. Tom was using 80# mono line.
This time it was the one that was to be. The fight was
on. As the fish made one nice leap the two knew that this was to be
a big task. Maybe too big. So they got on the radio and asked
for assistance.
With luck a MDR Angler member, Jeorge Carvajal, was out
and in the area. They lent fellow angler Ray Madgriguel to the
"Goat II".
The gaff job was handled by Ray and Tom himself. Tom
says that the gaff job was great and lifted the tail nicely. (see

Many people saw the fish in the TV news shows and the
fish was on display for one day as arrangements were made to donate the
meat to a shelter. |
