1. Entrants must comply with California and Federal Fish and Game laws. (If a fish requires measuring, it will be with the mouth closed.)
2. All fish must be caught on rod and reel by the entrant submitting the fish. Anglers shall use IGFA methods of fishing with the following change: Trap hooks and treble hooks will be allowed if the hook is embedded into the bait.
3. All persons aboard a private boat in which a Marina del Rey Halibut Derby entrant is fishing must be entered in the Derby. A person aboard who is not a Derby entrant will disqualify that boat and all Derby entrants aboard that boat. This rule does not apply to public sportfishing boats.
4. The fishing area is restricted to 5 miles offshore between Point Dume and Point Vicente.
5. All fish must be caught between Sunrise March 27, 1999, and 4:00 P.M. March 28, 1999.
6. Prizes will be awarded based upon the weight of the fish or, in case of a tie, then on the weight and length.
7. In the heaviest fish competition, each angler may weigh in one fish per day. Only each entrant’s heaviest fish will be eligible for a prize. One prize per entrant.
8. In the team competition, one fish may be weighed in per day by each team member. Prizes will be awarded to the highest total number of points earned by one team. The same fish weighed in by each team member for the individual competition will be used for the team competition. Teams may consist of 2, 3, or 4 anglers. Anglers may be on as many as 4 teams. Points will be calculated by the following formula: The total pounds of fish (adding the heaviest fish for each angler) divided by the number of anglers on the team. That is average weight of the heaviest fish. Divide the total number of fish weighed in by the number of anglers on the team. That is the average number of fish weighed in. Multiply the average weight times the average number of fish. The result is the number of points for that team.
9. In the youth division, angler must be 15 years old or younger. One fish may be weighed in each day. Only each entrant’s heaviest fish will be eligible for a prize. Prizes in the Youth Division are different from the adult individual competition.
10. Only the fish weighed at the official Halibut Derby weigh station will be eligible for a prize.
11. The Derby will be run on the dates specified regardless of weather or sea conditions. However, if the National Weather Service issues a small craft, gale or storm warning for Santa Monica Bay for both days of the Derby, then the Derby will be postponed to a later date. All prizes will be awarded as if held on the original date. No entry fee will be refunded for any reason including weather.
12. All fish weighed in will be subject to identification markings and other inspections the judges deem necessary, including removal of internal or external organs.
13. The judges may disqualify an entrant or fish for violation of the rules and regulations or other reasons deemed necessary. The decision of the judges shall be final.
14. It is the prize winner’s responsibility to claim and use awards in a timely manner. The Derby will not be responsible for the availability, delivery, or utilization of prizes once they have been awarded.
15. A prize not claimed and picked up within two (2) months of the Derby shall become property of Marina del Rey Anglers.
