MDRA Meeting Sept 8 1999

Fish tips Fish tips

A good informative meeting......

Marlin Fishing Speakers Panel

Marlin info panel gave out lots of tips and had some new and different ideas.

Ken Cowan; Carl Lambert; Bob Godfrey, the moderator; John Romanak; and Dick Sheffer were the panel.

Ken the owner of Windebra, and past owner of Harold's lucky Jackpot, had a lot of new information that I had not heard before.  He had great info on leadering the fish at the boat and lure selection.

Carl, owner of Non-Taxing, shared his live bait fishing tips.

John Romanak, owner of Bait-n-Switch, shared some very practical advice about the "drop back" and boat handling.

Dick, the owner of Purfields Pro Tackle, had more technical info on rods than I could note. His store did the wrap on the long parabolic rod Carl uses for light line. His views on lure selection were very different from Ken's.

Other Cub business:

Paul Simon reported on the Fish Program. The Hatchery has stalled the delivery of fish several times. Healthy fish may be delivered soon.

Keep up the good work Paul and all you "Pen Pals" (P.S. Paul is a Past Halibut Derby Chairman)

Paul Simon

Also Shark News:

Tom Brooks who caught the 986 # Mako shark on Sept 5th was in the audience. He was given applause and a chance to tell the "tail".

MDRA Club members Jeorge Carvajal and Joanne Shea were out fishing in the area and transferred Ray Madrigal from their boat to "Goat II" so that there was a second gaffer on board to help with their monster catch.

Tom explained how the gaff job by the two gaffers made all the difference. The tail was lifted high and took the fish under control quickly. Enabling him to get a tail rope onto the fish and subduing the large fish with a minimum of thrashing about.

The day before Tom's son Tyler caught a great Mako also. A 258# shark that will likely receive a youth record for the state. Tyler is 15 years old. The 258# mako caught on Sept 4th was gaffed and was able to tow the boat all the way around before the tail could be subdued.

Tom was sure that if the team was not successful in quickly pulling the tail that his 24 foot skipjack would have been towed a long way by the fish that he estimated to be close to a thousand pounds. At the dock it weighed in at 986 pounds and made the TV news on many stations.
