January 2012
Annual
Swap Meet
January 12th 2012
On our first meeting on the new date,
Thursday, we had a turn out of approx 35 people. 6 people brought items
for the Swap Meet. Boat fenders went fast. Some reels and tackle
changed hands. Tackle boxes went. JJM gets special mention for
off-loading the most stuff. None of the many rods on hand were
exchanged. That seems a bit funny. Do we all have enough fishing rods?
MDRA Director Jose Govea gave a presentation
reviewing boat maintenance.

Here Jose gives his presentation to a rapt MDRA audience
Thank you to all members who helped set up and who helped
break down. We appreciate the hand.

December 2011 meeting was a dinner party

Read about it in the January 2012
Full Scoop.
Heartiest congratulations to Terrie Lavery for chairing this great event, to
Mark Fuchs for the Cajun Turkey dinner and Keith for bringing in the
talented magician in his family. An interesting coincidence that both Josh
and Keith have sleight of hand artists in the family. We will have to keep a
close eye on them. The decorating committee also did a great job on the tree
and table decorations which were the best ever. About 50 of our members
brought toys for tots, which were picked up by the local Fire Dept. There
was no Club business at this meeting just good company and a chance for our
families to mingle and bond with other members.

November 9th 2011 meeting.
We had a good speaker from Ships to Reefs make a presentation that was very
interesting. When he was showing us the photos of the local reef of the
sunken ship the Star of Scotland we were treated to a up close view. The
audience was very thankful to get a good view of the conditions on the bottom.
We also had the Charity Auction of the fishing tackle donated by the Elliot Wasser Estate.
The wide ranging collection of quality fishing rods, assorted reels and
misc. tackle. It all sold and generated close to a Thousand dollars for
the MDR Youth Fishing Program. We will put those funds to good use.
The successful bidders are also looking to putting the tackle
to use on their next long range trip.

October 2011 had multiple events

We can had a small memorial moment, tossed some flowers to the sea, had toast

Instead of one of his normal fishing classes Joshua is going to get as many
local Kids to the Marina to fish at the Del Rey Sportfishing docks as possible.
Come on out everybody! Bring out your kids/grandkids/nieces and nephews or that
neighbor kid in need of a little time away from the game station. Joshua is
working with Rick O. and they will wave the $10 fee to fish from the docks in
front of Fisherman's Village. Lots of fun and learning to be had for the kids.
What a great kick off for the little kids just out of school that week! Timing
is perfect! The booths and handouts will be geared for kids from elementary
school ages etc. Do try to attend. Teaching kids to fish is fun.
Fishing Contest and Fish Fry - June 11th
Get a team together and go fishing. Bring your
fillets to the dock and weigh in the catch after cleaning! This is when you need
that yearbook to call the MDRA members you want on board your boat guys. Set up
a good team. Weigh in your biggest fish of the day (must submit a MDRA Weight
Slip) and weigh in the bag of fillets. Then the
Fish Fry begins and we have a good feed.
Only $5. per angler to participate.

Annual MDRA Swap
Meet. Its a New Year! All you fishing guys and
gals. Now is the time to go get out all the reels for servicing. And
figure out the tackle that you do not want to keep. Then put aside
all that for the Annual
MDRA Swap meet.
There are a few of you who have too many rods.
There are a few who have too few. In my opinion there are a lot more
of the former. You know who you are.

together to celebrate the
holidays with MDRA on December 8, 2010 at

feast for all of us. This was be
a very special event with incredible Cajun Christmas Cuisine, (Mark
is known nationally for his Jambalaya), fantastic magic show by
Magician Super Star, Stan Gerson, a holiday mega -raffle and please
don't forget our toy drive. Stan Gerson (Master of Magic) has
performed for royalty, celebrities and heads of state around the
world and is a member and regular performer at the Los Angeles Magic
Castle and London Magic Circle. His special up close magic was great entertainment for
all. We were amazed.
Plenty brought new, unwrapped toys and some posed to get your photo with our
local fire fighters and heroes.

MDRA Club Meeting on Wednesday
October 13, 2010 - Starts at 7:00 PM
Ever have a knot break or reel in a curly cue
at the end of your line? Hooking a fish is hard enough but losing
it to a bad not is heart breaking. And of course little fish don't
break line or knots. That's why we have the expression, "you
should'a seen the big one that got away." Losing a big fish to a
bad knot will happen no more!!! Say "No More" lost fish to bad
knots.
Join the pros from Izorline for the Official
2010 MDRA Knot Tying Contest. Prizes will be awarded to the
strongest knot in different applications, ie knot to hook or lure;
splicing mono to braid and splicing fluoro to mono. Just how good
are YOUR knots? Get them tested by the famous traveling Izorline
Knot Testing Machine and learn the strongest knots from the best of
the best. - the Izorline Pros.
Larry Brown will host this event and he
assures this will be fun, entertaining and critically important to
developing your fish catching skills.

Picture yourself fishing
on a pristine Alaskan river, landing huge trout and 4 different species of
salmon surrounded by majestic mountains and sharing this scene with bears,
elk and bald eagles nearly everywhere you look.. Salmon today; tomorrow's
plan is to catch trophy halibut and monster ling cods. Rivers Inlet Sportsmans Lodge is donating an all inclusive trip for two to the MDR
Halibut Derby and Fishing Director Simon Kelly will be with us Wednesday,
October 8 to share some of his incredible experiences with clients in the
rugged and exquisitely gorgeous Alaskan wilderness. Please mark your
calendars to be with us to thank Simon and to experience some of his
adventures.

MDRA Club Meeting - November 12 2008
Professional kayakers, Paul Quirk and Mark Pierpont,
joined us November 12 to introduce their world of kayak fishing. Entering the
world of private water craft has never been easier. Kayaks are cheap and
safe and, boy, do they catch fish. Mark and Paul both caught eligible
halibut at the MDR Halibut Derby. Other kayakers caught legal halibut but
less than the 26 inch minimum to be weighed at the derby scales, meaning
kayakers caught a high percentage of the total fish on derby day. Mark
Pierpont nailed 3rd place at the MDR Halibut Derby with a 36+ pound butt
from his kayak. This is fishing, up close and personal. Paul runs Pablo Joe
Kayaking, a professional kayak fishing guide service and teaches kayak
safety and fishing and donated a kayak fishing trip to the MDR Halibut
Derby. Mark manages US Wilderness Systems Kayaks who donated a top of the
line kayak to the MDR Halibut Derby. Mark and Paul compete successfully in
dozens of kayak fishing tournaments all over the west and beyond.

MDRA Club Meeting - December 11 2008

This was really good. Len Johnson from
FURUNO was the guest speaker. Len brought a presentation
showing how to read your fish finder and radar more exactly. It is
important to understand what a thermocline
looks like and some of the odd formations that may be bait or squid. He
also explain how to fine tune your radar so it will show birds etc.
He set up FURUNO screen displays in the front for real hands on Q&A.

April 12th Meeting
| On April 12th we had Jim Rounds as our speaker. He heads the
halibut hatchery that recently had the break in and theft of
the big breeder halibut. He gave a very informative talk with a slide show
and good news 3 of the 4 halibut we donated via our MDR Halibut Derby
are doing well. one was handled to much and died as the results of
the subsequent infections etc. The tail had splits from the net
and the narrow had hand marks from being picked up. That will
remove all the "slime" that protects the fish. (he
showed the photos around) |
