200430th AnnualMarina Del Rey Halibut Derby
Action as of day 1 - Saturday April 3rd 2004 The first really big fish of the day was weighed in by 9 year old Clayton Herrman. He told of how he was using a whole squid and standing at the port corner he hooked into the fish and played it all the way to the boat. At first he did not know it was a big one. He was using a very old Bisbee Fenwick 196-5 rod. On it was a equally old Pen Squider with line that was also 4 or more years old. Skipper and Gaffer Michael Arujo made sure the fish was played easily. He reported that it was almost 20 minutes from hook up to boat. Of all the hot sticks on his boat the "5 C's" and with what was obviously a lot of great rods and tackle. It was the old trusty rod and the smallest angler who boated the biggest fish. version The next big one came in a little later in the day. Here is Erik in front of the fish grow out pens. He had just brought this beauty in off the boat. He and his buddy fished hard all weekend on an open boat. (Note the banner for The Inn At Mazatlan!) One of the top prizes. They fished on this seaworthy little fishing skiff.
Some of the other fish the came in on Saturday...
Will someone win the Truck? We hope so.
