| Wow!! The Marina Del Rey Anglers' 28th Annual, Marina
Del Rey Halibut Derby, was held April 6 and 7, it was another real blow-out event!
We saw bigger fish than many of the past years. Lots of talk was
that the absence of the Gill Nets made the larger fish possible.
Mannie Mendelson took a early first place lead with a 44.7 pound halibut that he weighed in on Saturday. Mannie is a local fisherman that works at the bait store on the Santa Monica Pier. He plans to have the fish mounted and to display it in the window at the shop. That should really encourage the pier fishermen. He was fishing in the local waters near Santa Monica when he caught it. Second place was a very nice 40 pound fish that was caught by Bill Stembridge. He was fishing with the famous knife maker Frank McGill in 65 feet of water off of Twin Towers.
In the 2002 Marina Del Rey Halibut Derby there were many hard working volunteers that made this event possible. If you want to be a part of this good group of people check out the Marina Del Rey Anglers fishing club.
