Helps Kids in Need
One of the most rewarding and satisfying activities in which Marina del Rey Anglers is involved is sponsoring the "Kid's Day Out Fishing" program. The Anglers invite groups of about thirty to forty boys and girls, ages nine to fourteen, to spend a half day on one of the Marina del Rey party boats, usually the "Betty-O" on which the skipper Mike Reinsch and his crew are very considerate of the kids.
There will invariably be several children who have never fished and occasionally one or two who have never seen the ocean before. You can't imagine a more enthusiastic group. Everything necessary for a real fishing experience is provided for the Kids — rods, reels, bait, terminal tackle and the guiding hand of caring men and women from the club.
The trips have been expanded in 1999 due to the success of the last two derbies and some substantial donations. We are now taking many trips and booking the two half day trips on almost every week in the summer. In 1999 nearly 500 kids were our guest on these trips. Members of the MDR Anglers fishing club were aboard to help and instruct the children.
