From The 4-4-00 MARINA DEL REY DERBY ANGLERS FIND THE BIG HALIBUT The Millennium 2000 Halibut Derby, co-sponsored by Marina del Rey Anglers and Mercury Marine attended by almost 1,000 anglers, gave out $75,000 in prizes, raising lots of money for charity and conservation, and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone involved. It took over three hours to make all the awards and hand out 1,000 raffle prizes, many of which were expensive rods and reels, large spools of line, lures, jigs, electronics, clothing, party-boat and charter trips. The actual number of signed-up anglers who fished for halibut in Santa Monica Bay on Saturday and Sunday, April 1 and 2, was 983, including 50 in the youth division. The winning fish, 32.1 pounds, 41 1/2 inches, was caught by Luis Lopez of Playa del Rey, followed closely by Deborah Marcuse of Redondo Beach with a 31.2 pounder at 40 1/2 inches, and Paul Kiers of Malibu with a 30 pounder, also 40 1/2 inches. The fourth, fifth and sixth places were won by Jason Pyeatt of Los Angeles, Tom Mercurio of Garden Grove, and Ted Haddad of North Hollywood, all with halibut between 29.1 and 28.7 pounds, all three measuring 41 1/2 inches. The top five awards were five-day fishing excursions for two people to Alaska and Mexico. First prize trip is to Dog Fish Bay Lodge, Homer, Alaska; second and third prize are to The Inn at Mazatlan and El Cid Hotel and Marina in Mazatlan, Mexico. Fourth prize is to Hotel Punta Colorada, on the East Cape of Baja, Mexico, and fifth prize to Las Rocas Resort, Rosarito Beach.
The team competition, scored by points based on the total weight and the number of fish caught by the team members, was closely contested.

A highlight of the Sunday afternoon Awards Party was the presentation of a check for $10,000 from Mercury Marine to the Halibut Derby. The presentation to the Derby Fund was made by Curt Arakawa, District Manager and David Bolton, Regional Business Manager of Mercury. The Millennium 2000 Halibut Derby, the 26th consecutive Annual Derby held by Marina del Rey Anglers, upheld the tradition in fine style, providing the entrants with a memorable two days of fishing, a great barbecue dinner, and a wealth of valuable prizes.
