                      FISHING IN THE DERBY HELPS

                      RESTORE AN IMPORTANT FISHERY

Marina Del Rey Anglers has released over 20,000 White Sea Bass into Santa Monica Bay in the last three years. This non-profit club is affiliated with the Ocean Resources Enhancement and Hatchery Program, one of the most important conservation projects in Southern California. Established by the state legislature in 1974, it is an experiment in mariculture, the breeding and rearing of fish in a marine environment. The goal of the experiment is to determine if the method is feasible for restoring the endangered and threatened species to their former abundance. If successful it would be beneficial to both commercial and recreational fishing. Each grow-out facility is maintained by a devoted group of volunteers and is financed by fund-raising activities. The Annual Halibut Derby is the source of revenue for the Marina del Rey grow-out pens. Participating in the Derby is your direct contribution to this important conservation effort. Marina del Rey Anglers has recently launched its second holding pen which is moored adjacent to the Halibut Derby weigh-in station.
