The club business handled was a Donation to Heal The Bay and voting for Fish of the Month.
Mark Gold of Heal the Bay had to miss the meeting as he had some surgery... Get well soon. So the lovely assistant Laurie Scanlon came along for the ride. She was dressed for a Dinner Cruse and some fishing. She was surprised at how it was more a Fishing Trip with some dinner. What a good sport she was. Being a diver and spear fisher-person she rolled with the swing of the tide and fished as hard as we did (She brought her rod along). She had no problems with the flying fish scales. Later in the evening She accepted a check of $1000. MDRA donated to Heal the Bay from Halibut Derby Proceeds.
My fish did not win "Fish of the Month". Being lucky wont win any more ... You need skill and to use light line. Jeorge Carvajal caught a 28# Halibut on 8# line and beat out my 55# Yellowfin Tuna on 30# Line. Congratulations Jeorge! His picture (with Joanne) is above.
It was fun and the boat was packed. To bad more fish were not caught. The fishing could not be predicted when the boat trip was arranged months ago. The Jackpot winning fish was a big healthy sandbass. Harold Cabrera was lucky (as usual) and won the top raffel prize a Shimano Corsair 300 reel.
Our challenge between Pacific Mariners Yacht club and Marina Del Rey Anglers was not much of a challenge. Our club took all of the honors! This was the debut of the women's teams and it was a rousing success. Congratulations to the women's team aboard Greg and Dora Belda's boat, Without Remorse for taking the top prize in the women's division with a 12 lb halibut. The team members who split the first place prize were Dora Belda, Dawn Caldwell, Michelle Kaufman, and Susie Doral. Dave Napolitano fishing aboard the Line Cutter took the top prize in the men's division. Special thanks goes to Stan and Todd Kassap hosting the other women's team aboard their beautiful boat, the Su Sea Q.
Thanks to our head "cheerleader" Vic Jedlicka for really getting both teams going with his infectious enthusiasm, even at 6:00 A.M.! At the dinner following the fishing, Mike Cooley did a fabulous job standing in as chef to cook the hamburgers, while Jerry Napolitano sold raffle tickets. We all had a great time.
The Speaker was Larry Derr. Good meeting with over 50 in attendance. The only comment that was not a rave was... "Get your head down we can't see!" The under water video was great. Thanks Larry.
If you missed it you will have to wait for next time Larry Derr comes to MDRA to show the live action video of halibut striking the anchovy on the slow drift. Now we know why there are so many "false strikes" when halibut fishing.
